Swimming in the Rio Negro (black river) in Amazonas, Brazil, not far from a group successfully fishing for piranhas. |
| I thank those who asked about the outcome of my surgery. In early March, 2008, I was diagnosed with a dilated (aneurysmic) aortic root and severely regurgitating aortic valve. This came as a shock to me as I was preparing for my second triathlon in March! On Friday, April 4, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, I had surgery to replace the aortic root, ascending aorta and aortic valve . On Monday morning, after a 3-day stay, I was discharged. In 1 - 2 weeks, I can starting using non-impact aerobic equipment at the gym. After the sternum is completely healed in 6 - 8 weeks, I can get back to training for an Olympic-length Triathlon in Boulder City, NV. |
