Ah, Tampa, my adopted home town (resident of Hillsborough County for 21 years). The September 2003, group in one of our great, local parks. This group asked more questions than my 13 year old son - no small feat, but very admirable!

This Anchorage class, September 2003, was my second trip to Anchorage and was by special request. This site is a dog run area, so I let the local participants bring their dogs.

A terrific Annapolis, September 2003 class! Our primary site at a local park was rained out (standing water of > 1 foot) so we delineated the "back yard" of one of the participants.

The Charlotte class of August 2003, was, as always, top notch! This picture appeared in several local newspapers because one of the participants is a commissioner of the City of Lake Norman.

Although Oahu is overrun with exotics, this Hawaiian Stilt, which is similar in appearance to the mainland Black-necked Stilt, is native and endangered.

Some folks take this training stuff way too seriously!

This is a Red-cockaded Woodpecker next to its cavity. RCWs are a federally-threatened species in the southeast in large part, because they are the only woodpecker in the world that nests in live trees and uses the same roost over and over.

Another great Salt Lake City class (April 2003). This pic was taken in Snow Basin, near several 2002 Olympic downhill events.

Atlanta is a great city with great folks, great parks (like this Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area) and great red silt ultisol soils. This is the April 2003, class.

Another great class in Woburn, MA, March 2003. Woburn is pronounced "woo-burn" by these commonwealth folks. (They also pronounce Peabody as "Pee-buh-dee" with the accent on the last syllable, but I never heard Mr. Peabody pronounced as "Mr. Pee-buh-dee" on the Rocky and Bullwinkle hour.)

Another great class in Ann Arbor, March 2003. This was typical Michigan weather; over a two-week period the temperature ranged from -6 to 60°F!

This class in State College had the coldest weather that I had seen there in the 6 years that I had been going there, always in February.

A very sharp Advanced Wetland Management class in San Diego in January 2003. The weather in San Diego in January, normally nice and cool, was warmer than in Tampa.

A typical great class in San Diego, January 2003. This picture is a site that we monitor in Valle de las palmas (Valley of the Palms) in Mexico. Unfortunately, the locals dredge the red clay soils to make pots. We are working with the alcalde to preserve the vernal pool areas.

Our first class of 2003, Orlando in January, endured rain of nearly biblical proportions but overcame it.

In April 2001, the City of Ann Arbor gave me a parking ticket for parking in a handicapped spot, even though I had a broken leg and I had left a copy of my discharge papers on the dashboard. When I appealed, they lowered the penalty a little, but I still had to pay $50 even though I had a legitimate handicapped parking sticker by that time. I hope the parking police use these revenues to buy and fund their parks.

The State College, PA, February 2002, class at Bear Meadows, a National Historic Landmark! After a rocky start, Penn State's football team came on strong in 2001.

At long last, we are pleased to provide the Seattle, January 2002, class picture! Lake Washington is in the background. This is in a University of Washington (pronounced "U" "Dub") wetland.

San Diego, January 2002, class in the Pennesquitos Lagoon. The previous day was spent enjoyably in Tecate, Mexico.

The Pasco/Kennewick, WA, January 2002, special class. We can do these special classes for as few as 10 persons! This area of Washington is much more like Colorado than Seattle!

The New Orleans, December 2001 group offered good, Southern hospitality!

This Portland, December 2001 group was rightfully proud of their Ducks! There were some accomplished birders in this group!

A dilligent Sacramento, September 2001 class. Sacramento is in the Central Valley of California and is noted for its vernal pools, rice production, high-flying Sacramento Kings, and Beal Air Force Base - defender of liberty and home of the U2.

Tampa, September 2001 class. This picture was taken in Alderman's Ford Park, a place where one can find histosols, abandoned river channels, backwater flooded areas, and slope wetlands all in one place! And, Buddy Freddy's restaurant is on the way!

Charlotte, August 2001 class. The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have proactive environmental agencies!

August 2001, Boulder class in front of the Rocky Mountains on Boulder Open Space land that was very farsightedly placed into conservation years ago!

Boulder is such a great place to live and work! No hurricanes, no shark attacks, no land slides, no volcanoes...

Senator, I know glaciers. Glaciers are a friend of mine. And this, Senator, is a glacier!*

A successful, and, I'm told, typical halibut catch. Most of the halibut were about 30 lbs. The skipper, Josh, (third from left) knows his stuff! If you are going to Seward, I would recommend him as a skipper.

By the way, they thought Secretary of State William Seward was an idiot in 1867 when he agreed to purchase Alaska from the Russians for 2¢ / acre! The Russians were willing to sell it because they had almost completely extirpated the Sea Otters and felt there was little value left in Alaska.

Madison wetland class participants are a hardy breed. They withstand freezing winters, ice fishing on 5 gallon buckets, humid summers, home losses to Fresno State... August 2001.

The Annapolis 6/01 class at the Jugs Bay Wetland.

The San Francisco area 6/01 class in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just north of San Francisco. This area was a military base during WWII. Do you think this place was hopping on December 7, 1941?

The Atlanta 5/01 class at Power's Ferry in the beautiful Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Power's Ferry was a crossing point of the river.

The Minneapolis / St. Paul 5/01 class in front of a beautiful Minnesota marsh in the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area.

The Houston 4/01 class. Included in this group was a scholarship defensive end for Northwestern who played in the Rose Bowl and may end up in the NFL! Kind of gives credibility to that "oxymoron" of Smart Jock, doesn't it?

The Anchorage 8/00 class stands in front of Cook's Inlet (where one can spot Belugas). In the distance is Denali (Mt. McKinley), the highest mountain in North America.

The Madison (Wisconsin) 7/00 class near a swamp adjacent to the holy waters of Lake Mendota, possibly the most studied lake in the world.

What's with all these Bite Me hats? See Boulder 8/99 (below). This one was from a Minnesotan where Berg's Law is absolutely true; the higher the latitude, the bigger the mosquitoes!

The San Francisco 6/00 class stands in front of a marsh covered by Downingia sp. Technically, a site that has vernal pool species, such as Downingia sp., is a vernal pool.

The Boston 4/00 class in one of the common New England Histosols. Notice the obligate Skunk Cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus, one of the first herbs to emerge in the spring. This plant can elevate its temperature to be 5°C.

The Salt Lake City 3/00 class has a beautiful backdrop. It is easy to see why Salt Lake was chosen for the 2002 Olympics.

with its Carlisle Muck (namesake of Carlisle, PA), a Typic Medisaprist histosol soil. Snowboarding and skiing are available on nearby Tussey Mountain Ski Area.

Matt (l) and Doug (r) clown around with a preserved "Nittany Lion" in the lobby of the hotel. Technically, there never was a Nittany Lion as the Penn State mascot is called. The local lion, the Pennsylvania Mountain Lion, was a subspecies of the Western Mountain Lion that went extinct in the 1800s. The only known preserved specimen is at, - you guessed it - Penn State. I wonder how many visitors assume this is a preserved Nittany Lion.

The Orlando 1/00 class stands on a quaking bog sphagnum peat soil (sphagnofibrist).

The San Diego 1/00 class stands in a vernal pool in Tecate, Mexico. This class witnessed the Federales pursuing an escaped rapist on foot!

The San Diego 1/00 class has lunch in Richard Chinn's favorite Mexican restaurant, a taceria in Tecate, just down the street from the Tecate brewery. Visitors can get one free beer per visit at the brewery!

The Atlanta 12/99 class poses before a forested wetland in the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area. This class did an excellent job dealing with Problem Area soils!

The Kansas City 10/99 class poses in front of a very cool seepage slope wetland. The dominant plant on the hillside is Equisetum sp. This area was under 10' of water during the 1993 "Great Flood.

The special Austin 10/99 class for Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission and Texas Parks & Wildlife staff stands in front of huge rock outcrops that Austin is noted for (along with the capitol, Dell, and the Longhorns). The stream in the background has < ½" of soil; below that is bedrock.

The 10/99 Lombard (Chicago) class was an outstanding group. The gentleman in the center (applying the headlock) is a part-time professional wrestler with the "Southern Mississippi Militia" who has wrestled Hulk Hogan

The 10/99 Sacramento class stands on a rare Histosol (typic Medisaprist) in Solano County in front of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range. This class was able to see typical vernal pools.

The 9/99 Tampa class was mistaken for a Sheriff's Work Crew by a convenience store clerk.

The 8/99 Houston class knew how to beat the heat!
